Spearfishing: a selective and low impact method of hunting fish for food

What is spearfishing?

Spearfishing is the practice of hunting fish underwater using a spear gun or pole spear. It has gained recognition as one of the most sustainable and ethical methods of catching fish compared to traditional fishing methods.

Using skills and knowledge from freediving, swimming, hunting and fishing, spearfishers take a big breath of air and dive down to depths of up to 100 feet or more to target fish. The goal is to be one with the ocean, admire the beautiful marine life, and hunt for fish to bring home to eat.

Some of the distinctive highlights of spearfishing are described below:

  1. Selectivity: Spearfishing allows for precise targeting of specific fish species, sizes, and quantities. Spearfishers can choose their targets carefully, aiming for sustainable and responsible harvesting practices. When I target fish, I make sure I am targeting the correct species, size, and gender, before spearing the fish. (That is a lot to think about holding your breath 50 feet below the ocean surface!)

  1. Low Environmental Impact: Compared to some traditional fishing methods that involve nets or traps, spearfishing has minimal impact on marine habitats and ecosystems. Spearfishers can target individual fish without causing damage to surrounding marine life or habitats. There is no “bycatch” or unexpected catching or harming of non-target fish or animals, which is more common with traditional fishing methods or nets. Sometimes even endangered species are harmed from bycatch!
  1. Skill and Technique: Spearfishing requires a high level of skill, technique, and physical fitness. It involves breath-holding, coordination and strength of small muscles in your mouth for equalizing, precise aim, and knowledge of marine environments and fish behavior. Mastering these skills takes years of practice and dedication, making spearfishing a challenging and rewarding pursuit. I have enjoyed progressing in my passions and learning more each year. I have enjoyed learning the stereotypical behaviors of each fish species. My spearfishing progression has fostered a sense of achievement and personal fulfillment while promoting a more intimate and sustainable interaction with the marine environment.

  1. Connection to Nature: Spearfishing fosters a deep connection to the marine environment and promotes a greater understanding and appreciation of marine ecosystems. Spearfishers, myself included, have developed a profound respect for marine life and their role as stewards of the ocean. I personally have a “give and take” approach to spearfishing. I take a fish from the ocean, however I try to balance the scales by giving something back. When I find harmful trash or fishing line, I remove it to prevent harm to marine life. I want to leave the ecosystem cleaner than when I found it.

  1. Sustainable Harvesting: When practiced responsibly and in accordance with regulations, spearfishing can be a sustainable way to harvest fish for food and recreation. Many spearfishing communities and organizations advocate for sustainable fishing practices, including adherence to catch limits, size restrictions, and protected areas. By following these guidelines, spearfishers contribute to the conservation of fish stocks and the preservation of marine biodiversity for future generations.
  1. Cultural and Historical Significance: Spearfishing has a long history and cultural significance in many coastal communities around the world. It has been practiced for centuries by indigenous peoples and traditional fishing cultures as a means of sustenance, cultural expression, and spiritual connection to the ocean. I first learned spearfishing by using the traditional “Hawaiian sling” that was used by the native Hawaiians and Polynesians in the past and present.

In summary, spearfishing stands out as one of the most sustainable and ethical methods of catching fish compared to traditional fishing methods. Through its selective targeting, low environmental impact, promotion of conservation efforts, and emphasis on skill development, spearfishing fosters a deeper connection with nature. Spearfishing represents a model for responsible fishing practices that prioritize the health of oceanic life (and yourself) as well as promotes the health and protection of the future generations of marine ecosystems.
